What is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback is a science-based approach that helps people gain greater awareness and control over their body’s physiological processes. Using specialized sensors and real-time feedback, biofeedback allows you to observe nervous system functioning such as your heart rate, breathing patterns, muscle tension, and temperature, to learn how to regulate these physiological processes more effectively.
Many symptoms of anxiety, stress, and emotional overwhelm are closely connected to how the autonomic nervous system is functioning. When the body becomes chronically stuck in a state of fight-or-flight activation, it can lead to difficulties with sleep, concentration, emotional regulation, and physical well-being. Biofeedback helps bring these systems back into balance by teaching the body how to shift into a calmer, more regulated state.
One of the most widely used forms of biofeedback is heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback. HRV measures the natural variation in time between heartbeats and reflects the flexibility and resilience of the autonomic nervous system. Higher HRV is associated with better stress tolerance, emotional regulation, and overall health.
Biofeedback has been studied for decades and is supported by a growing body of research demonstrating its effectiveness for anxiety, stress-related disorders, ADHD, insomnia, migraines, chronic pain, and peak-performance training. By providing clients with direct insight into how their nervous system is functioning, biofeedback helps transform invisible physiological processes into skills that can be practiced and strengthened over time.
How Biofeedback Works and Who It Can Help
Many people understand that they are impacted by stress and anxiety–and may understand the causes of these feelings–yet still feel overwhelmed by their body’s reactions. This is because the nervous system often responds automatically and outside of conscious awareness. Biofeedback provides a way to directly train the body to respond differently.
At Highline Psychotherapy, biofeedback is used together with traditional talk therapies such as CBT, exposure therapy, DBT, mindfulness-based approaches, and trauma-informed therapy. While talk therapy helps people understand their experiences and develop new ways of thinking and behaving, biofeedback helps regulate the underlying physiological systems that drive feelings of stress, emotional reactivity, and overwhelm.
Together, this integrated approach supports change from both the top down and the bottom up.
Biofeedback can be particularly helpful for individuals experiencing:
Anxiety and chronic stress
Panic symptoms
PTSD
ADHD and attention difficulties
Sleep problems and insomnia
Emotional reactivity or burnout
OCD and specific phobias
Headaches and muscle tension
Performance anxiety
What is the process?
The process begins with an assessment of your symptoms, background and history, stress patterns, and goals for treatment. During biofeedback sessions, sensors are placed to measure physiological signals such as heart rate, breathing patterns, skin conductance, skin temperature, or muscle tension.
These signals are displayed in real time on a screen, allowing you to see how your body responds to stress and relaxation. Through guided breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and attentional strategies, you learn how to influence these physiological responses.
A central focus of our work is heart rate variability (HRV) training, which helps synchronize breathing and heart rhythms to improve nervous system balance. As clients practice these techniques, they often experience increased calm, improved focus, and a greater ability to tolerate and recover from stress.
Over time, these skills become more automatic, allowing clients to feel a greater sense of calm regulation, and ease everyday life.
Why we specialize in Biofeedback
At Highline Psychotherapy, we believe biofeedback is a powerful tool for helping clients reconnect with their bodies and develop a deeper sense of control over their stress responses. When people can see their physiology in real time, it often helps clients realize that their symptoms are not simply “in their head,” but connected to real and measurable nervous system patterns.
Biofeedback allows us to work directly with those patterns. By strengthening the body’s natural regulatory systems, clients can experience improvements in emotional balance, resilience, and overall well-being.
In our practice, biofeedback is most effective when combined with thoughtful, supportive talk therapy. While therapy helps people process experiences and develop insight, biofeedback helps the nervous system learn how to stay calmer and more flexible under stress so that clients can access insight to help meet life’s challenges.
Our belief in the use of biofeedback is rooted in experiences with clients who have found a sustainable sense of calm and balance through this treatment. This integrated approach can create meaningful and lasting change.
