Depression Therapy - Manhattan, NYC - Highline Psychotherapy

Does life feel very heavy? Is it hard to find motivation to do basic tasks? Is sadness ever-present? Do you feel disconnected or isolated from others?

Are You Struggling With A Chronic Feeling of Depression?

With depression, life can feel overwhelming, impossible, and just not worth it. Rational arguments to change or move in a certain direction don’t work. You may even be able to cognitively explain why you shouldn’t feel this way, and yet - you still do.

But perhaps a small part of you believes life can change. A skilled clinician trained in depression therapy can help breathe life into that part, so you can reclaim your life from depression.

Depression Wears Many Different Hats

At Highline Psychotherapy, we aim to work with the entirety of you. Our depression therapy goes beyond just the psychological experience of depression, integrating the neurological and physiological components as well.

Depression can express as feelings of extreme and persistent sadness, lack of motivation, lethargy, difficulty concentrating, executive function issues, interpersonal conflict, lack of ability to connect emotionally, bodily aches and pain, appetite fluctuation, gut irregularities, sleep disruption or over-sleeping, mood swings, among many other symptoms.

While these symptoms may seem impenetrable, know that depression is highly treatable. Depression therapy at Highline Psychotherapy is highly individuated. Your therapist will work with you to understand your experience, and using the integration of empathy, psychology, and neuroscience, will help you find freedom from depression and agency to create a meaningful life.

Depression is Very Common and Very Misunderstood

Nearly 1 in 5 American adults is diagnosed with depression (1), and many more experience symptoms without receiving a formal diagnosis. Unfortunately, a lot of false perceptions surround depression. Perspectives that suggest you should “just be grateful” or “do this short workbook exercise” and other similar quick fix attitudes are pervasive. This misunderstanding often leaves you feeling unseen, not allowed to reach out for help, and isolated from support. A vicious cycle is created that deepens the depression.

My Depression Feels Insurmountable

The feeling that healing from depression is impossible, that you lack the energy, that it is too far gone, are very common. Unfortunately, it isn’t part of the school curriculum to teach emotional fluency or regulation. Being overwhelmed by our internal experiences is an understandable phenomena. Oftentimes, trying to share these internal experiences with others can overwhelm them too, further deepening a sense of shame and isolation around a difficult emotion.

At Highline Psychotherapy, our depression therapy recognizes the depth of the depressive despair, and the challenges you face in climbing back to the surface. Our depression therapy aims to turn that vicious cycle into a virtuous one. With a finely tuned understanding of the nervous systems role in depression, and an empathetic attunement to your psychological experience, we will help you shift your inertia and build back the life you deserve.

Depression Therapy Can Help You Reclaim Your Life

All people experience challenges in life, but certain challenges are harder to face than others. Our clinicians trained in depression therapy recognize that your particular experience is unique, and work with you to build an individuated treatment plan.

Session Structure

The first goal of depression therapy is to build a safe, trusting, workable relationship with your therapist. This is called “therapeutic rapport.” Through that process, you will learn to engage with someone else, yourself, and reality without reacting away from, or shutting down to, the experience. Through that, your therapist will learn more about you, your history, and the events that led to you seeking depression therapy.

Once therapeutic rapport is established, and the context is understood, a more individuated protocol can be designed. Our therapists understand that depression is not merely a mental phenomenon. There is a neurological, physiological, dopaminergic, hormonal, and other levels to it as well. In other words, we understand that depression is a totalizing experience, and therefore, a full bodied, systemic, holistic approach is warranted. After all, we aren’t just floating heads.

A very common experience with depression is the recognition that you cannot “think your way out of it.” Even though you recognize the blessings in your life, you don’t feel them. There are certain nervous system patterns which are common to depression. When we think of anxiety, we think of “fight-or-flight dominance.” That is nervous system language. In depression, the other side of the nervous system, the “rest-or-digest” branch (parasympathetic) becomes dominant. We can work directly with your nervous system, via biofeedback, neurofeedback, vagus nerve regulation, and other methods, to help shift your autonomic functioning.

In tandem with developing stability and regulation within your system, the psychological aspect of depression is explored. What thought patterns are contributing to your depression? What behaviors reinforce this state? Is your life structured in a suboptimal way? Do you have a sufficiently meaningful goal that you are growing towards?

Your depression therapist will guide you through a plurality of modalities and techniques to get your life back on track, in the way which is most optimized and individuated to your specific experience.

I Still Have Some Questions About Depression Therapy

Talking about my depression usually makes it worse. Why would talk therapy help?

Our depression therapists are goal oriented, and are trained to understand what depression actually is. They will guide the direction of the sessions towards recognizing negative patterns, unhelpful beliefs, and maladaptive coping mechanisms, and work towards change and growth which are anti-thetical to depression.

I’ve been in talk therapy before. Why would it work now?

We understand the unique challenge posed by depression. We also understand the flaws in many isolated therapeutic modalities. We work from an integrative perspective, recognizing that there are many non-psychological factors which contribute to depression, and may inhibit growth and healing if not treated first. Think of it as tilling the soil before planting a seed. That’s what we specialize in, and what separates us from many other psychotherapists.

Therapy seems like such a big lift. What if I just don’t have the energy?

First of all, you’re right - therapy requires effort. Part of the challenge of depression is that it saps your energy and motivation, leaving you drained and heavy. Our modalities can address that, and work within your system to find more intrinsic ease and smoother functioning. This will grant you more access to your inner resources and free up the necessary energy and motivation to accomplish your therapeutic goals.
