Neurofeedback
What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a neuroscience-informed approach that helps train your brain to function more efficiently. Sometimes referred to as EEG biofeedback, neurofeedback uses small sensors placed on the scalp to measure brainwave activity in real time. That information is then translated into immediate feedback, often delivered through a movie, sound, or a video game, so your brain can learn to regulate itself more effectively.
While many talk-therapies focus primarily on thoughts, feelings, or behaviors, neurofeedback works directly with the brain’s electrical patterns. When certain brainwave patterns are too fast, too slow, or out of sync, they can contribute to symptoms like anxiety, depression, ADHD, insomnia, and trauma-related distress. Neurofeedback gently rewards healthier patterns, strengthening the brain’s natural ability to self-correct through neuroplasticity. It’s kind of like going to the gym for your brain.
The roots of neurofeedback trace back to the 1960s, when researchers such as Dr. Joe Kamiya and Dr. Barry Sterman discovered that people could learn to change their brainwave activity with feedback. Since then, neurofeedback has evolved into a sophisticated and research-supported intervention used in both clinical and performance settings.
Today, it is widely used to support attention and executive functioning, emotional regulation, nervous system stability, peak performance, recovery from TBI, chronic stress, or trauma. At its core, neurofeedback helps the brain better adapt, regulate, and heal, supporting desired change for clients.
How Neurofeedback Works and Who It Can Help
Many people seek therapy because they understand their patterns but still feel stuck. That’s often because understanding and insight alone isn’t always enough to shift longstanding patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior. Neurofeedback is an experiential therapy that can shift the brain’s baseline functioning, making the work of change more accessible and effective.
We use neurofeedback in conjunction with traditional talk therapies such as CBT, DBT, mindfulness-based approaches, and trauma-informed treatment. While neurofeedback works from the bottom up—helping stabilize brainwave patterns and improve nervous system regulation—talk therapy works from the top down, building awareness, strengthening coping skills, and supporting meaningful behavioral change. Together, this creates a comprehensive and integrated treatment experience.
We commonly support clients struggling with:
ADHD and executive functioning challenges
Anxiety and chronic stress
Depression and low motivation
Trauma and PTSD
Sleep disturbances
Emotional reactivity
Burnout and performance pressure
What is the process?
The process begins with a thorough assessment to understand your symptoms, goals, and nervous system patterns. This includes a QEEG assessment to understand the brain-based neurological patterns that may be contributing to symptoms. From there, we design a personalized neurofeedback protocol that aligns with your therapeutic work.
During sessions, sensors are placed on the scalp (non-invasive and painless) to monitor brain activity while you watch a screen or listen to audio. When your brain shifts into healthier patterns, it receives immediate feedback (for example, the video you are watching becomes brighter and louder). Over time, these patterns become more stable and automatic.
As regulation improves, clients often find they can engage more deeply in talk therapy, tolerate difficult emotions more effectively, move through their lives with greater awareness, and are able to implement changes with greater consistency.
Why we specialize in Neurofeedback
We believe that neurofeedback can be a transformational modality for both clients and therapists. Clients often begin to feel shifts in focus, calm, and emotional stability as their brains learn to regulate more efficiently, while therapists have the opportunity to support that change through both brain-based training and meaningful therapeutic work.
Although many therapeutic approaches can be helpful, neurofeedback allows us to address challenges at a neurological level in addition to the psychological level. By helping the brain develop healthier patterns of activity, it supports lasting improvements in attention, emotional regulation, resilience, and overall well-being.
Our use of neurofeedback is rooted in experience seeing it’s benefits for our clients. When combined with thoughtful, supportive talk therapy, the results can be powerful. That’s why we believe so strongly in this approach.
